The internal combustion engine may not be going anywhere anytime soon, but it's clear that its days are numbered as the car industry's primary power source. As automobility slowly but sure transitions to its electric destiny, Lexus is embracing the future, planning to release 20 all-new or updated vehicles by 2025. And the last Friday, Lexus announced its first major step toward its lofty goal: the next-gen 2022 Lexus NX.

While the 2022 Lexus NX's launch is still a ways away, there are plenty of details for Silver Spring and Potomac drivers to look forward to. Here's a quick summary of two of our favorite new attributes of the upcoming model: its powertrains and infotainment system.

New Lexus NX Powertrains

The 2022 Lexus NX will be available in four distinct powertrain variants, with new naturally aspirated, turbocharged, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid engine options. Here's a quick summation:

  • 2022 Lexus NX 250: Though technically the "entry-level" model, the 2022 NX 250 finds plenty of motivation in a responsive 2.5L turbo-four (203 horsepower, 184 pound-feet of torque) paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel or available all-wheel-drive.

  • 2022 Lexus NX 350: Lexus states that a lower center of gravity and enhancements to vehicle rigidity allow for significantly more power than the previous NX 300. The 2022 NX 350 features a new 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder making 275 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. Like the NX 250, an eight-speed automatic transmission is standard and all-wheel-drive is optional.

  • 2022 Lexus NX 350h: Great performance doesn't have to come at the cost of great efficiency. The NX 350h's Lexus Hybrid Drive system matches a D4-S fuel injection 2.5L four-cylinder engine with two high-torque electric drive motor-generators for strong acceleration and passing performance. Rated at 239 horsepower, the NX 350h boasts a 20% increase over the outgoing NX 300h. The NX 350h's standard all-wheel-drive system leverages an independent electric motor to drive the rear wheels when needed to maintain optimal traction.

  • 2022 Lexus NX 450h: Bringing Lexus Electrified to life, the all-new NX 450+ plug-in hybrid represents a first for the premium automaker. This energetic yet efficient powertrain combines a 2.5L Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine with three permanent magnet synchronous motors to deliver a robust 302 horsepower. And with its 18.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, it boasts a manufacturer-estimated 36-mile range on electric power only.

All-New Lexus Interface

The 2022 Lexus NX features the brilliant new Lexus Interface multimedia system that allows the NX to seamlessly integrate your connected world. The standard 9.8-inch infotainment system features a high-resolution touchscreen and a new Human-Machine Interface (HMI) that balances accessibility needs and enhances interaction through sight, touch, and voice. Washington DC customers can also maximize their experience with the optional 14-inch touchscreen with integrated automatic climate control functionality. And for uncluttered smartphone integration, the Lexus NX comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The Lexus Interface incorporates Lexus' new Virtual Assistant, designed to be the primary way drivers interact with the system. Virtual Assistant leverages dual microphones, enhanced noise-cancellation, seat detection, and speaker location to provide a voice-first approach to accessing features like navigation, media, calls and messaging, and certain vehicle settings like climate control and windows.

One-hundred percent cloud capability allows for quicker and more precise directions and mapping, as well as over-the-air real-time updates. The native navigation system can even detect when the vehicle is near an area with low connectivity and download applicable map data for use offline.

Lexus Safety System+ 3.0

For enhanced safety and convenience, the 2022 Lexus NX will also come equipped with an extensive array of the latest Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 driver aids, including several all-new technologies. The list includes:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian and Oncoming Vehicle Detection
  • Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist
  • Right/Left Turn Oncoming Pedestrian Detection/Braking
  • Left Turn Oncoming Vehicle Detection/Braking
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Curve Speed Management
  • Intelligent High Beam
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Safe Exit Assist
